Bone Conduction Implants

To meet the wide variety of needs among those who suffer from hearing loss, manufacturers of hearing aids are always developing new models. Recent developments in implantable hearing aid technology, notably the cochlear implant (often referred to as the "Bionic Ear") and the bone conduction implant, have been rather remarkable.

One of the newest technological advancements in hearing aids is the bone conduction implant and processor, which can be used by patients who are incapable or do not benefit from using standard hearing aids. Those with conductive hearing loss or unilateral deafness may find relief using bone conduction implants, which facilitate direct connection with the inner ear.

Bone-conduction implants are not for everyone.

Bone conduction implants and processors will soon be available as an alternative to traditional hearing aids for people with conductive hearing loss or single-sided deafness. If you have a history of chronic ear infections and/or discharge, severe skin problems in the ear canal, or a history of middle ear surgery, you may be an ideal candidate.

What is their mechanism of operation?

What is their mechanism of operation?

The hearing aid uses the natural process of bone conduction to send unaltered sound waves directly to the inner ear, rather than attempting to circumvent the compromised middle or outer ear, as is the case with more traditional solutions. To make the vibrations perceptible, a sound processor takes in background noise and amplifies it. Vibrations transmitted from the little implant to your inner ear via the abutment or magnetic connection stimulate the bone directly.

An audiologist will fit and adjust the sound processor after an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat) surgeon implants a bone conduction system during surgery. One Indian company that makes bone conduction implants and processors is Med-El; two others are Cochlear & Oticon Medical and Sound Heal. We will customize our suggestions for each patient according to their unique needs and, of course, surgical suitability; still, there is a wide range of solutions accessible, just as with traditional hearing aids. We love the fact that the Cochlear Baha 5 processor works with iPhones.
